Everyone has one and sometimes two. It is their favourite little spot or patch to pitch a tent or pop the camper.

Wattle Flat Camping Area is a stunning campsite boarded by the Styx river on one side and beautiful native forest on the other. The campsite track meanders it way through several large grassy areas all with their own view and access to the river. This site can be busy and sometimes you might even find that you have the site all to yourself.

The native animals seem to thrive here. Platypus can be seen in the pools at dawn and dusk along with the occasional sight of cheeky quolls. During the day you can find eastern grey kangaroos and red-necked wallabies. On warm summer nights fireflies blink in the bush along with greater gliders, brushtail possums, sugar gliders and owls.

The river winds past the campsite with two large swimming holes at either end big enough to explore with a canoe. With Dutton trout hatchery upstream, the river is stocked with trout making for great fishing (apparently, we have had no luck!) Depending on river water level you can adventure down river for a taste of white-water canoeing. Dropping the canoe in at the Picnic Area and paddle down the river to arrive at the campsite downstream.

The area is packed with some amazing landmarks just up the road is Beech Lookout that is just entrée of what’s to come. Point Lookout is a must-see destination perched on the edge of the Great Escarpment with panoramic views over the world heritage rainforest to the ocean.  The surrounding forest on the escarpment are just amazing feeling like a complexly different world to Styx River.
